Days 74 through 84

(Dan’s comments are italicized)

Firstly, thank you to everyone who contacted us, worried that we’ve not posted recently; it makes us feel loved.

We left Lusaka, flew back to Johannesburg, and took a bit of a time-out from travel as we needed time to think! We’ve done some really deep soul-searching and have a plan moving forward.

Sunsets always help with soul-searching!

Basically, since Rachael died, we’ve both been adrift and trying to find purpose while dealing with guilt, self-hatred, self-recrimination, and a slew of other negative emotions. We hide it well, but the burden is heavy. Here, in Africa, we feel we’re close to finding our purpose and we both feel ‘lighter’ because of it. We’ve spoken to so many people in different countries, have accidentally networked, and feel we can make an impact on literacy here.

So, we’re hoping to become snowbirds in Tucson and base ourselves in Johannesburg to help improve literacy in southern/eastern Africa. It helps that we have friends in J’berg (who live in a safe part of town) who introduced us to S. African life, and let us play house in their home when they left for Ireland. Thank you, Pete and Marie.

That’s the plan. But there’s much to do before anything happens. Our attitude is that if things don’t work out, we just backtrack.

After making the decision, it’s back to traveling and we returned to Kruger two days ago. We’ll upload a proper post tomorrow.

We are working really hard to find purpose and direction again; southern Africa has a pulse that we both can feel, and we wish to be a part of it. I’ll also have an excuse to buy some more tools!!

I’m thrilled that you two have found your meaningful purpose and I hav no doubt that your efforts will be a huge benefit there. I am also devastated that you’ll only be “snowbirds” in A and am desperately hoping that I’ll still get to see you once in awhile!

It’s very exciting to think of how you may move forward with your plans. Will you be staying with your friends or buying/renting a home there? Would love to hear more about your plans and how you expect to move forward. Working in existing schools? Teaching teachers? Teaching kids? Building a new school? So many possibilities!

I’m up in WA till the 4th – arrived on 7/20 – so have not been checking email regularly. My son and grand-daughter arrive tomorrow on her way to a Volleyball camp at Seattle Pacific U where there’ll be a scout that might guide her towards a college scholarship next year after she graduates High School. She’s never met some of my family so it should be fun. We (brother and wife, 2 nephews and 1 girlfriend) went for beers this evening and so all of us seem to be turning in earlier than usual tonight! Me too. Love you two very much and wish only the very best for you – sounds like you may be on a Healing Path. Blessings on you. Love, C

I hope you have a great time with your family in WA!! I’m eager to hear if you have any more news about the move back to Tucson. We’d get our own place in S Africa and would be trying to get my reading program into schools. We’ve networked a lot while traveling this year and I think we may have some great contacts. The move would be for however long it feels right, though I think we’d have to commit to at least 2 years. But of course we’d see you!!!! Move back to Tucson already 😵‍💫

No clear path for us going forward – still many options and all have pros and cons. As soon as I know, you’ll know, and in any event, I’ll be making trips to Tucson so we can connect sometimes.

So glad to hear you are both ok. I was worried as well. You are making a very admirable decision and one that will bring a lot of good, both to the two of you as well as all you touch with your kindness.
    Hugs,
    Kathleen

I think of the two of you daily. You have a special place in my heart. I want you to be happy, and to feel fulfilled in your endeavors. But I will miss you. I hope you are in Tucson in February. I will be visiting then. Miss you both.
