Days 91 thru 93

(Rhia’s comments are italicized)

After the storm blew through, the surf got a bit rough. We walked along the coast and just watched the waves crashing ashore. It was really quite magical, but also a bit cold. Being that it was a weekend, there were a lot of people who were doing the same thing as we were. And like us, they were all staying out of the water. I’m guessing that the tall waves were cresting at 18 feet!!

The rough sea was launching water spray the height of the hotel.

It was beautiful to watch and awe-inspiring to be shown, once again, the power of nature. There was something magical about watching such rough seas in the sunshine.

The birds seemed to quite enjoy the wind gusts.
Oh dear, between the lack of a haircut and the wind, I look like the wild man of Borneo!

The crashing waves gave much fodder for the sunset photos though. Dan thinks I post too many photos of waves, sunsets, elephants etc. but my reasoning is that if someone doesn’t want to see them they’ll scroll past!

The waves were almost as rough the next day but we tore ourselves away briefly to drive up to the paragliding launch port on Signal Hill. Signal Hill is a great place that overlooks Cape Town and our beach, and gives a great perspective on Table Mountain. Watching the paragliders launch reminded me of the days that I took hang gliding lessons and flew by myself off a mountain in San Diego back in 1995. Good Times! As for me, I don’t think anyone could pay me enough to do it…the lack of control of my own fate would either kill me or make me lose my mind! In Wales we use the expression Yeah, no!” It means that the question/suggestion/dilemma has been heard and considered thoroughly and that the response is, “Not in a million years!!!” I think I muttered this to myself a few dozen times as I was taking photos. In addition to the flight itself being a Yeah No activity, were I to be knocked out and strapped to one of these Death Contraptions, I’d probably end up in the ocean…you know, the one with 15 foot waves! Yeah, No!!

I mean, seriously…??
Yeah, No!
This peak on Signal Hill is Lion Head. People hike up it 😂 Yeah, No
Lion Head and Table Mountain
Table Mountain from Signal Hill. Sadly, the cable car up to the top of that mountain is closed due to seasonal maintenance (thwarted again) 😔
That building to the right of the tree is where the cable car starts; the little altar -looking blob at the top is where the cable car ends. Had it been open, I would have done it (because I’d said I would) BUT I was not an unhappy camper that it was closed 😁
Victoria and Alfred Wharf
Some sports arena 🤷
Our place is on the beach in front of the buildings on the far left

Our time in Cape Town has been about the ocean (and mint ice-cream ) so, really, we just wanted to stay by the waves 🌊 (and eat mint ice-cream)!

This sculpture is titled The Whales and the Snail. Apparently there’s a story behind it but we couldn’t find out what it was.
Lion Head from our apartment
I’m certainly going to miss the ocean and the sunsets! I feel more at peace by the ocean than I do anywhere else… except, maybe, watching elephants.

I know I should be living in the moment, but even though we have a day left at the oceanside, I am starting to miss it already 😔. Me too BUT today we made a decision about our plan for the next week; three days of travel and then… something you probably won’t be shocked about.

The crashing waves shots are magnificent and the sunset progressions are stunning! Good Job, Rhia! I’d be hard-pressed to leave such sights myself – so we have to wait 3 days to find out where you’re going next?!?

    Darn!

Did you get me email – or were the attachments too large to open?

What wonderful shots of the beaches and the powerful waves. I love the ocean! Love walking near it, listening to it! You brought the beach to me with your photos! Thank you!
