Days 43 and 44
(Dan’s comments are italicized)
We decided to have a different experience today as we were starting to feel withdrawals, having not been on a boat for a while! Corfu has ties to the age of piracy so you can sail along part of the island on a ‘pirate ship’

Typically, I’m not big on gimmicky things BUT..

…this was fun! I’m not sure if I’m entering my dotage or relaxing more, but I even enjoyed the music (including “What shall we do with the drunken sailor” π)

The day itself was a perfect blue which made for the perfect backdrop, turning any silly photo into a beautiful memory!

We sailed past the house (now a museum) where the late Prince Philip (husband to the late Queen Elizabeth II) was born…reportedly on the kitchen table!?!?

And we sailed past the (former) church where Prince Philip was christened.

It was a very relaxing time!

Later, Dan went to the old fortress while I relaxed and rested my feet (though what I was relaxing from is questionable).
The town of old Corfu, Kerkira, is bookended by two fortresses, the new one, and the old one. The Old Fortress has been built up since 1352 AD. It has been used to protect from pirates and invaders for centuries, and is still in use today as a music school among other things. It is the dominant feature of the peninsula that we are staying on. The fort has changed hands too many times to write here, but Napoleon, of course, had his moment of ownership until defeat.

The next day, we decided to catch a bus to the museum/house where Prince Philip was born. Before going in, we saw an excavation site with a 2,000 year old building that was built using material recycled from something about 600 years earlier! It’s mind-blowing to me! Inside the museum were displayed items from this site (and others in the gardens of the house) that were around 2,700 years old!

It was strange to think that we were walking where Prince Philip probably played as a child!
The gardens themselves were beautiful and with ancient ruins awaiting excavation! One can but wonder what was hiding beneath one’s feet!

The sea views from the gardens were magnificent (as always).

But today, I was struck by something else…some of the trees had really interesting trunks and roots! To me, they’re so beautiful and help explain how authors and poets get their ideas for some of their flights of fancy.
And if this IS my dotage, bring it on π

Whereas I was taken in by the expensive and luxurious billionaire super yacht that was parked out in the bay. I don’t ever want the responsibility of owning one, but would not mind having the responsibility of the wealth that affords one. π

π I must be a more simple, tree-hugging, low-key, low-maintenance person because these yachts hold absolutely no appeal to me at all! A big house right on the oceanfront of somewhere warm, however.. that’s a whole different story!
