Days 39 and 40

(Dan’s comments are italicized)

  • Tram to Metro
  • Metro to Naples train station
  • Train to Caserta
  • Train to Brindisi
  • Bus to port
  • Ferry to Corfu
  • By foot to old town Kerkira

What a day! It took 24 hours from leaving our Airbnb in Naples to getting to our Airbnb in Corfu! But we’re in Greece, one of my favorite places and where I always went to heal from what life threw at me.

Saying goodbye to Naples was sad as it has been a great base for us to go to the places that interest us. We’d figured out the trains and trams and buses and had become very proficient at getting around effortlessly. When I say ‘we’, I mean Dan as I can only read a map if it’s facing the same way I’m facing!

Armed with enough snacks for a small army, we were up to this travel challenge. And I must say we did well. Something we’ve found during this trip is that the little things you do for others are returned almost immediately. For instance, I spontaneously grabbed a woman’s heavy suitcase and carried down the steps for her. then, while we were standing outside the train station contemplating how to get to the ferry boat, she popped up and arranged the ride for us to get there, and for CHEAP! We’re often lucky in that way.

I’ve spent countless hours on ferries island hopping in Greece. But the ferries have changed in 38 years, as has my financial means. In the old days, I bought the cheapest ticket and lay down outside on the ferry floor to try to sleep. Last night, we traveled business class…

…though it was still hard on these old bones (and my slightly younger ones). Walking the last 1 1/2 miles was difficult, but we did it (as we’re too frugal to blow money on a taxi 😂)

Pirate ship we walked past on our way from the port. “Why,” you ask? “Why not’ I reply.
The new fort.

After a brief nap (and an equally brief storm), we walked slowly around the old town to get our bearings.

Narrow streets, deserted at 7:30 in the morning on a Sunday! No need for Magic Eraser here! And the incoming storm kept it deserted until it passed.
Pretty square with the Old fort in the background
The old palace, now a museum
A pile of rocks…?!?!?
Pretty doorway
A tired Dan and me. We were trying to get the sea in the background but totally missed 😂 I took the picture, and I missed looking at the camera?

Boats seemed to be my thing today…it’s remarkable that I’m even functioning as I’m so tired!

As we were having lunch, we heard some music and a bridal procession walked past the square. It was a nice welcome to Greece 💖

Despite our excitement about having successfully navigated to Greece without a hitch, We were exhausted and retired early. We kind of know what we want to do tomorrow, but we will plan that in the morning. Such is the life of backpacking.

Greece was my second guess as to where you were going next (after coming home!)! I’ve always wanted to go there and am looking forward to all your pictures showing me what I’m missing! Short storms notwithstanding, the weather seems to have always been pretty pleasant for you – that’s certainly a bonus! or is that how you decide where to go next?

Happy 4th of July and Full Moon week! Still 110-ish here, no rain in sight.

Greece has always been one of my favorite places. When I worked in Kuwat, the school gave us a free flight back to the UK annually on Olympic Airlines (the Greek airline) so I stopped off in Greece every year for a month or so! I’ve never been to Corfu (or this side of Greece) though! I’m currently in bed contemplating getting up and watching a huge flock of swallows outside flying around. I’m amazed they don’t bump into each other! I hope you’re able to stay cool in those temperatures!

I’m staying cool – but not much is getting done outside! (Or inside for that matter!) How long do you plan to stay where you are now? Did you ever see the film “Shirley Valentine”? It’s about an unhappy British housewife who runs away to Greece to find herself – and does! Quite delightful.

When it’s unbearably hot, just surviving is good enough! I’ll make sure to watch that movie on my return 🤗

As you know, I’m not a foodie in any way, shape, or form. But the food is good (and hasn’t given me stomach problems so must use less sugar and preservatives than in the US!)
